A family legacy of dedication and commitment to Buckingham, Browne & Nichols, and BB&N

The graduation of Louie Varadi ’24 in June, as a member of the 50th class to graduate from BB&N, maintains nearly a century of family connections with the schools that merged in 1974 to form the BB&N of today.

Louie’s great uncle Henry Winslow ’56, and grandmother Katharine (Kathy) Winslow Herzog ’62 share their memories of their time at Browne & Nichols and Buckingham, and why they have been consistent and loyal donors for so many years.

Henry Winslow, Browne & Nichols 1956

“I grew up in Cambridge and after nine years at Shady Hill School, I entered Browne & Nichols in the 10th grade, Class of 1956. My favorite teachers were Mssrs. Denny and Brisbois, my favorite subjects were math and history, and I was proud to receive the math prize in 1956.

“After B&N I went to Harvard, majoring in the probability and statistics side of math.

I then got a masters degree in actuarial math at the University of Michigan and after passing a series of professional exams I became an actuary (FSA). My entire career was spent at John Hancock in Boston working primarily on actuarial projects regarding retirement income products. After retiring from John Hancock I helped my wife, BJ, with her decorative antiques business.

“Reflecting on today’s BB&N, I’m glad that friends of mine whose kids went there were pleased with the school. Recently a grandnephew of mine graduated from the school, and his sister will start her second year there. It is fun to be a co-alumni(ae) with my sister, them, and earlier my mother Katharine Winslow, Buckingham 1929.

“I have included BB&N in my will, and have given to the school nearly every year. I plan to continue to do so because of my memories as a student there, the school’s current reputation, the accomplishments of its alumni and alumnae, the gratitude the school shows to those who support it, and to be loyal to my grandnephew Louie Varadi ‘24 and grandniece Katy ’27.”

Kathy (Katharine) Winslow Herzog, Buckingham 1962

“Raised in Cambridge, after my 9th grade graduation from Shady Hill School, I followed my mother's much earlier, and somewhat similar, path to Buckingham, thus becoming a member of the Buckingham Class of 1962 in the 10th grade. My new Buckingham classmates were very welcoming over my three years with them and have remained lifelong friends.

“Headmistress Miss Valliant and exceptional Buckingham teachers, such as Mrs. Stowe, Miss Reinthaler, Miss Smith, and Miss Biery, prepared me well for the challenges of life as a student at Mount Holyoke College. Autographs in my Buckingham Packet yearbook reveal I was considered quite a whiz at science, but at MHC I majored in psychology and then taught elementary school after graduation. Once settled in Connecticut, my husband Dr. Al Herzog, and I raised two terrific daughters, Trina and Anne.

“Supporting Buckingham financially has always seemed to be the right thing to do, my initial small donations turning into larger ones. After the merger, I continued my yearly donations to BB&N and have since included a financial gift to BB&N in my will. I realize that financial support to BB&N is vital. Seeing our grandson Louie and granddaughter Katy follow my brother's and my paths to BB&N for their important high school years has brought me great pleasure and added to my conviction that it is more important than ever to give back to BB&N. I was so proud to see Louie graduate from BB&N in June, and I am also privileged to serve as a Connecticut member of the BB&N Grandparent Committee.”
